THC in this case stands for “Taima Torishimariho Henkaku Center” (translated as Cannabis Control Law Reform Center). They are a non-profit group of advocates in Japan who have one goal: To challenge the Taima Torishimariho in Japan at the Supreme Court, arguing that the severe punishments doled out for marijuana violations are unconstitutional because the severity of the penalties far outweigh any potential harm that cannabis use can inflict on society.
Marijuana fields may still be found in Benguet’s most remote villages, but the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) said the province was no longer the country’s marijuana capital.

Japanese Marijuana Terminology
To close out our feature on Japan, the MJO would like to present a “cannabis collage” of sorts, showcasing different aspects of cannabis in Japanese life.
On January 29th 2009, 25 year old Shinichi Suzukawa was arrested in Japan for the possession of marijuana. His arrest has brought to light the cannabis culture that has taken a hold of the island-nation.
The Japanese government has faced an increasingly problematic rise in marijuana use over the past few years. Faced with what it perceives to be an immense threat to its populace, the Japanese Government has instituted a major crack down on cannabis use in the hope of preventing it from spreading further.
The Japanese youth, eager to soak up anything American have taken to cannabis culture in increasing numbers, but lost in a society of neon, smoke, and towering monoliths, the truth of Japan’s history with marijuana may have become lost to this newer generation of Japanese.
As longtime readers of the MJO will attest we are fans of long-term, open-ended features. And today we are introducing another one: Global Ganja.
